Miguel's Family

Miguel's Family | Realistic Fiction | Elliot Riley | No Awards | ages 4-6 |

“Miguel loves his family. Miguel’s family loves Miguel.”

There are many types of families and this is a short story illustrating the life of Miguel, and life with his family. Miguel lives with his parents, sisters, and grandparents and the rest of his family lives nearby. Miguel plays with his sisters like any other kid. They do story time together, create costumes, act out their stories on stage. Family, friends and neighbors gather around to view the show and they all clap and cheer for them. Miguel loves his family, and his family loves him.

Although this is a short story, this book contains resources for you to use during your lesson. The first page comes with a short teaching focus, a brief before reading plan, and an after reading plan. There’s even an activity plan for students to do- picture collage of families. And though it’s a brief story, there’s new vocabulary words you can teach students, which at the end, there’s a glossary for. I would use this book in my classroom, because it’s already prepped for a lesson plan which you can squeeze into a lesson of language arts when learning about the genres, one being drama, typically in the grade level pre kindergarten through first grade. At the end of the book, there’s a few questions to talk among with your students to reflect and make connections with their personal lives. another active i s creating  book of their own showing their family no sharing with teh class. It works great for the first weeks of school when students and teachers are still trying to get to know each other.
