Harold and the Purple Crayon

Harold and the Purple Crayon | Fantasy | Crockett Johnson | Daytime Emmy Award Edgard Award; GOLD | ages 2-4 |

Harold, a young boy decides one day to go for a walk in the moonlight. With his imagination and his big purple crayon, Harold drew everything his mind could think of. His imagination leads him to many small adventures full of excitement and surprises, but soon he gets tired and decides to it’s time for bed, only he couldn’t find his bedroom now. He then remembers where his bedroom window is- around the moon- so he draws his window, his bed, and blanket, and goes to sleep.

This cute story is about a boy’s imagination and his crayon lead him to an adventure. In my classroom, I would use this book to share with the class the importance of our imaginations d the magical things it can help us achieve. This book is appropriate for grade levels preschool to first grade. Using this book as reference, I’d assigned the class an activity in which they create their own magical story. Because the audience is targeted towards the younger children, we could use pictures instance of writings, and to make the activity more fun and relatable to the story, give each student their own big purple crayon to do their story. We can also act out a made up story and practice basic terms of theatre in language arts such as characters of the story, setting, plot, etc.we can also discuss the different adventu4ew of Harold as a class and ask students what they think of reach scene or if they relate. We can learn new words such as the hot air balloon, city buildings, moon, etc.
