Sisters

Sisters | Autobiography | Raina Talgemeier | Eisner Award | ages 8-11 |

Raina can't wait to have a little sister so she can play with and do sister like things. The day comes when her long desired wish comes, except having a sister isn't at all what she expected. They don't get along and have different interests. Amara, her new sister is cranky, and mean. Their relationship remains the same, with fighting and arguments. However, they aren't the only ones who seem to be this way. The parents are going through a separation and Raina doesn't even notice. Not since she received a headset to listen to music and block out reality. It's not until they go in a road trip to Colorado, with her little brother, her sister Amara, and her mom when Raina realizes what's going on with her parents.

This is a good, fun, relatable, comic book that'll be loved by students. I would use this book in a third to seventh grade setting. A fun application of this book to the classroom is to have the students create their own autobiography in the same format. This way they can practice writing and make it fun where they can create their own designs and drawings. If possible, you can have the books published so in the end, the students can keep their actual real book created by them.
