Liberty

Liberty | Nonfiction | Lynn Curlee | Notable Children's Book | ages 7-12 |

We all know the great green Statue of Liberty that's in New York, representing freedom, but do we know the history of it? How it came to be? Where did it come from? And that green was not the original color? Lynn Curlee explains all of this to us in this book, capturing our attention with interesting facts of our Lady Liberty.

I think it's a great nonfiction book because as we all know, the Statue of Liberty is one of our greatest piece in America that symbolizes freedom. Whether we've been to New York or not, we all know of this statue. It'd be great if we all knew what it actually signified though and the history that led to this. As a teacher, I'd used this book to talk about of course our nation's history in 2nd to 7th grade setting, but we may also add it into the subject of world geography. Some class activities you may want to do with your students is have them make a sculpture of their own with a symbol to go along with it. You may also want to have a project in which groups or students individually are assigned a famous city of the world and include one of their major artifacts, an example being New York and the Statue of Liberty.
