Dear Primo: A Letter To My Cousin

Dear Primo | Realistic Fiction | Duncan Tonatiuh | Pura Belpre Award; Americas Award; Notable Children’s Book; Notable Books for Global Society | ages 4-8 |

Two cousins write each other from two different places. Charlie lives in America, and Carlitos lives in Mexico. Though they live in different settings and conditions, they share similar experiences. They plate each other on the things they do in their homes and end with a wonderful idea. They should visit each other.

A real relatable story for many students who have families outside the country. Students can connect with this book in which they have family they’ve never seen. This book can be used in a preschool to third grade classroom. Every page is written in a letter form so students can learn from here, the ornate of a. Letter. And because this book has Spanish words and the illustrations are Aztec based so they can learn a few things of the Spanish culture. Students can also create a compare and contrast diagram of the two cousins living in two different places. As a class, you can discuss whether they also have family outside the country. You can explore the map as you learn where your students come from. Have them see outside of the nation and learn about other places of the world. You can map out the locations, and also, make a chart of who has family living the farthest vs closest.
