The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs | Traditional Lit. | Bernadette Watts | ages 3-6 |

The Three Little Pigs is a classic story of three pigs who are building their homes and face the big bad wolf who wants to eat them. The first pig asks a kind stranger for straw to build his home and is given the whole bunch. The second pig asks a kind stranger for sticks to build his home, and is also given the whole bunch. The last pig asks a kind stranger for bricks to build his home, and is given the whole bunch. Individually, they begin to work on their homes and are interrupted one by one by the wolf who threatens to huff and puff their house away. The wolf destroys the first two houses but fails at the third house. In the end, the whole family reunites at the third pig’s house and they rejoice together.

This traditional literature story, retold by Bernadette Watts is a fun read told from generations to generations. I would use this book in a pre-k to first grade setting because books shouldn't always need a moral or academic lesson. This is a classic entertaining book to laugh along with. It incorporates onomatopoeia, which is always fun to add sound effects as you read to make the book come to life. And from cover to cover, beautiful illustrations are added that reflect the words. Some fun activities are creating our own houses from the materials used in the book. Recreating the story with puppets, plush toys, or acting it out. This can also be a beginner lesson on story sequence, highlighting the beginning, middle, and end of a book, by having the students place in order the events of the story.
