The Undefeated
The Undefeated | Poetry | Kwame Alexander | Caldecott; Golden Kite Award | ages 5-12 |
An appreciation to African Americans in history. This poem highlights events and people who are to be remember for their courage and strength through harsh times. People who fought for equal rights in this nation.I enjoyed reading Kwame Alexander’s poems in this book. They were heart touching and Kadir Nelson’s illustrations were realistic and beautiful as always. I would use this book to learn more about African American history. The appropriate grade levels are first to fourth grade. A way to include this book in the classroom is of course in social studies. There are multiple events highlighted in the book and we can reflect on a poem per lesson. Another activity is having the students write about something new they learned from the book and what amazed them or caught their attention.
